Andrade Drafted by Tampa Bay Rays

by Cody Ortega

Former Scorps player, Ryan Andrade, was selected in the 7th round (Pick 216) of the MLB Draft after a successful junior season at the University of Pittsburgh. Andrade‘s draft stock increased after a strong showing in the MLB Draft Combine, where he finished in the top 5 of many pitching categories, such as: FB Spin Rate, CB Spin Rate, and more.

Ryan’s fastball sits 93-94mph and has been clocked upwards of 98mph. His arsenal also consists of a big 12-6 curveball, slider, and excellent change-up. Major League Baseball had him ranked the 199th best prospect in the draft.

Ryan is a Middletown, Rhode Island native and began playing in the Scorpions New England program when he was 10 years old. Although he is being drafted as a pitcher, Andrade was an excellent middle infielder in his 8 years with the program. He committed to the University of Rhode Island his junior year of high school as a pitcher and helped lead the Middletown HS baseball team to a state championship his senior season.
After a successful sophomore campaign at URI, Ryan decided to enter the transfer portal and commit to the University of Pittsburgh as their Friday night starting pitcher. He led his team in strikeouts (72) and starts (15) and also finished the season with strong performances against ACC teams, such as Florida State, Miami, and Notre Dame.

It has been an absolute pleasure watching Ryan Andrade evolve not only as a player, but as a terrific young man on and off the field. He was a great teammate, coachable, humble, and a fierce competitor. We would like to congratulate Ryan and his family on being selected by the Tampa Bay Rays.
